I’ll be honest. Facing a blank white canvas still frightens me. Yet over time, I’ve discovered that my strongest works often emerge from failure. For me, painting is something that must first be broken. It must undergo shifts in composition, color, and material before it can develop maturely into its own.
I was trained in classical painting and approached painting with a realistic vision. Every detail was controlled and perfected. As my practice moved toward abstraction, however, I began to feel that the joy of painting lies not in the result, but in the process itself. When I approach the canvas with openness, accepting that anything might happen, the work is free to evolve on its own, naturally and honestly.
Making a painting is an experience where chaos and stillness coexist. I’m constantly weaving a dialogue between materials that resist and respond to each other, creating moments of tension and harmony. This requires physical movement as a catalyst for change. Guided by body gestures and material reactions beyond my control, these movements flow from thought to body and finally onto the canvas.
This openness to change connects not only to my practice, but also shapes how I move through life. Life is full of uncertainty, and that unpredictability is what keeps us alive. Stepping beyond comfort and into unease is what brings change and ultimately, growth.
Q:moor gallery ) What kinds of feelings or experiences are you most interested in translating into your work right now?
A:Aesther Chang ) 「Alongside technical exploration, painting is also a process of emotional change for me. There are moments when I’m suddenly overtaken by feeling, without knowing why. In those raw states, I feel closest to my paintings. They begin to emerge as living presences with a pulse, a breath, and emotions that shift. Giving a sense of life to something that is inherently lifeless still feels mysterious to me. But a painting without emotion feels dead.
Light and shadow remain central to my work. Influences from classical painting, especially the Old Masters’ use of chiaroscuro, continue to shape how I build space and atmosphere. Living in Kyoto has sharpened my sensitivity to light and shadow. The climate is constantly shifting, and the sky reveals ever-changing layers of color and form. I am especially drawn to transitional moments of dawn, dusk, and twilight, when color becomes more nuanced and the boundaries between reality and imagination begin to blur. Observing these moments has been a major source of inspiration.
The title of the exhibition, The Shape of Air, speaks to forms emerging from absence and reflects my process of holding controlled chaos and release. Air, in this sense, becomes something shaped by light, movement, and perception, much like the paintings themselves.
Q:moor gallery ) You have relocated to Japan. How has this move influenced you and your work?
